Peer, Californians Post First Round Wins

Jill Craybas
Shahar Peer made a confident start in the opening day of women’s main draw action, Wednesday at the BNP Paribas Open, needing just 58 minutes to ease past Ukraine’s Kateryna Bondarenko 6-2, 6-1 in the first match on Stadium 1. The Israeli has now won all four of their previous meetings, including last month in Fed Cup action.

Peer is making her fourth straight appearance in Indian Wells, with her best result the quarterfinals in 2007 (l. to Hantuchova). She next faces No. 10 seed Marion Bartoli of France; Peer boasts a 5-1 mark in the head-to-head series, but Bartoli won their last meeting two years ago at Wimbledon.

A pair of California residents followed with victorious efforts on Stadium 1. Nineteen-year-old wild card Alexa Glatch earned her first match win on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour this season, dismissing Canadian qualifier Stephanie Dubois 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 15 minutes. Meanwhile, 34-year-old Jill Craybas defeated Australian wild card Jelena Dokic 6-4, 6-2.

Czech Nicole Vaidisova also had no problems with her opening match, accounting for Dutch wild card Michaella Krajicek 6-3, 6-4. Former Top 10 player Vaidisova, who entered the week ranked No. 79, reached the quarterfinals at Indian Wells in 2007 before falling to eventual runner-up Svetlana Kuznetsova. She suffered an upset in her opening match last year at this tournament.

Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova advanced to the second round for the fourth straight year, defeating New Zealand’s Marina Erakovic 6-4, 6-1 to set up a date with top seed Dinara Safina. This will mark the second time she will confront the top seeded player in the BNP Paribas Open women’s draw. In 2006, she lost to No. 1 Justine Henin-Hardenne in the second round.

German Anna-Lena Groenefeld also earned a challenging second round match against former World No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo after posting a 6-3, 6-0 win over Romanian Monica Niculescu. Groenefeld reached the quarterfinals in her last event appearance three years ago (l. to Sharapova).

Other winners Wednesday included Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, China’s Na Li and Bulgarian Olga Govortsova.
